Hey Readers!
This week I am excited to introduce you to Sky Boivin. Sky is an author, poet, artist, creative entrepreneur and more! I recently read her poetry collection, The Dark Mirror, which has quickly become one of my favorite poetry collections.
Please join me in welcoming Sky to this week’s Substack post.
Thank you for joining us, Sky. Can you tell us about your earliest memory of writing or creating poetry? I wrote in school mainly as I had to write for class. But then I always sat off to the side, scribbling away in a journal. A story, a thought, a poem, a drawing or just what I saw along my classmates.
How has your relationship with writing evolved over the years?
It’s an outlet sometimes. A way to vent. It’s become therapeutic writing over the years. Sometimes, I just get inspired and have to write it down.
What poets or writers have most influenced your style and worldview?
I have a community on Twitter (X?) That I stumbled across before Covid. It was a beautiful cluster of writers around the world to connect to. Many of them inspired me as when as gave me the challenge of my writing that I was craving at the time. I learned so much with so many of them and am so appreciated to have found them.
When I first wrote in school, Anne Rice and Stephen King were huge for me. I loved their stories, and I wanted to be like them, respectfully.
Where do your ideas usually begin—an image, a feeling, a word?
It all depends. I’ve had photos posted to my timeline on Twitter and came back with 1 or more poems, a smell or something in life around me, feelings in life, anything really.
How do you know when a poem is truly finished?
It just feels done, or I have run out of thoughts to add to it.
What recurring themes or symbols do you find emerging in your work?
I haven’t really thought too much on that. I know I have segments of poems that use symbols like Alice in Wonderland with dark symbols such as; loss, hope, abuse, and more I can recall writing about.
You’ve had the opportunity to share your work at several book events. Have you ever been star-struck at any of these events or met someone whose work you admire?
Some favorite writers of mine I have not come across yet at this point in time. Mostly I like visiting other tables to get to know or hear other artists’ stories / experiences. They’re regular people like us. So it’s cool to hang out and chat it up with them.
How do you see the role of poetry in today’s world—personally and socially?
Poetry is hard. Many people come across as “I’ve written some in school...”. Mostly readers want stories. Which is why I have sectioned my smaller books for themes like Alice in Wonderland and Faye Love.
How do you handle creative blocks or doubt?
I am a Jill of all trades. I write, draw, paint, cross stitch, crotchet... haha. I keep busy and rotate through crafts.
What are you working on next? Anything else you would like to share?
Richard Maurizio is currently trying to turn one of my books into a graphic novel. He is still working out details on that. And then I have a story I will be working with Dr. Quinn at my college, to be titled, “Solider Mentality “ which will finalize my requirements to complete my BA in English finally after 18 years.
Thank you Sky for sharing your thoughts on writing with us!
