Author Spotlight: Allison Ramirez
Hey Readers!
I’m thrilled to spotlight Allison Ramirez this month on A Busy Lady Substack. Allison is a writer, editor, and storyteller with a deep love for words, faith, and beautifully crafted stories. She not only brings a rich background in creative writing and theology to her work, but she also served as the editor for my latest release, Tune In. From ministry and teaching to author coaching and publishing, Allison’s journey is rooted in service, curiosity, and a genuine love of story. I’m excited for you to get to know her rand her work a little better.
Enjoy!
What inspired you to become a writer, and how did you get started?
I have been writing for as long as I can remember! I wrote my first 50k book in middle school and my first full-length novel in high school, which I actually returned to years later and rewrote to become my debut and award-winning fiction novel, The Divided Kingdom. As a child, I would write in journals about little adventures I would dream up. In middle and highschool I enjoyed creative writing classes in school and being part of student literary journals. In college, I majored in English and worked in my campus writing center. Upon graduation, I began working on my first book series: The Rosary Invitations, and I self-published the first book in that series in 2021. I also published the first book in my fiction series, The Divided Kingdom, in 2023.
Can you tell us a little about your latest book and what readers can expect?
Yes, so I am thrilled to be publishing the final books in BOTH my book series this year. Blossom as Saints, a devotional on the Glorious Mysteries of the Rosary, is coming out on February 11! This will be the fourth and final book in the Rosary Invitations series, each book inviting readers into Mary’s garden, learning about a different theme relevant to each set of mysteries. The books are quick reads and very interactive, including short stories, journal prompts, discussion questions, prayers, meditations, reflections, activity suggestions, and more. The Return, the third and final book in The Divided Kingdom trilogy, is also set to come out later this year. This is a YA dystopian/sci-fi series with biblical Old Testament themes throughout.
How do you develop your characters? Do they come from real-life experiences or purely imagination?
A combination of both! While most of my characters begin in my imagination, most do end up with traits, motivations, or personalities with some resemblance to persons I know in real-life. What I love most is discovering my characters as the book(s) progress. Just as they grow and discover more of their world, so also do I come to discover more about humanity through the characters I craft.
What does your typical writing day look like?
My goal for 2026 is to write every day. So far, I have stuck pretty well to that goal, though the year is still young! I don’t give myself a word count or even time constraints, but I know if I can consistently sit down and write something related to one of my stories, then I will keep the writing muscle strong. For me, the time of day doesn’t matter so much as that I’m making the time. Some days, I get to writing first thing in the morning, and other times, not till the end of the day. I have found that, for me, working on multiple writing projects at once can give a variety of creative outlets, but working on one project through to completion gives me a greater sense of discipline.
Are there any authors or books that have had a major influence on your work?
Yes, I absolutely recommend The Light series by Jacqueline Brown, which I read during the COVID pandemic. These books opened my eyes to the sort of genre that would best fit with the characters I had written about in my high school days. Jacqueline is a talented author of the YA sci-fi/dystopian genre and does great work incorporating Christian threads into the narrative that feel natural to the story and characters.
What’s the most challenging part of writing for you, and how do you overcome it?
I struggle most with the first draft stage of writing. I would much rather work on revisions for something already written than write the story all the way through from start to finish when I’m still trying to figure out the story arc. Whether you are a discovery writer or if you write to a pre-prepared outline, the process of getting the story on the page is often easier said than done. I overcome this challenge by reminding myself that getting something down is always better than nothing. You can’t work with an empty page, but you can work with words, even if they aren’t the words that will end up being in the final draft.
Do you have any advice for aspiring writers who are just starting out?
Patience pays off, and consistency is key. If you develop a rhythm or routine for writing that works with your particular state in life, before you know it, the words will come eaisier and you’ll start to see stories taking shape where before there was only a blank slate. I also rely daily on prayer and offering over my creative desires and goals to the Lord, asking Him to guide my mind and my fingers as I type. I also pray every time I sit down to write, and I have some patron saints whom I ask to pray for me to help with the motivation and inspiration.
Thank you Allison for being here and sharing your insights. As we wrap up, is there anything else you would like to share?
