Hey Readers, Happy New Year! I hope you all had an amazing holiday season and are ready to kick off 2024 with your best foot forward!
So, to be honest, I’m not much of a New Year’s Resolution person because I am constantly reevaluating, making goals, breaking them down. Still, the New Year is a good time to pause, reflect and take stock of our progress. This past New Years, I was inspired by a fantastic Mel Robbins Podcast which you can find here
The podcast offered excellent tips on how to reflect on the past year and make meaningful plans for the next. I highly recommend it!
I also wanted to share my own tips with you. Check out the following Guide to making your new year amazing!
1. Don’t Underestimate the Power of Small Steps
Sometimes getting started is the hardest part. When I feel overwhelmed, I remind myself the power of small steps. For example, I once wanted to learn more about data law, so I took fifteen minutes a day to read an article or other information on the subject. My enthusiasm and confidence in the subject grew with that 15-minute commitment each day. Within just a few months, I was being asked to work on multiple data law related projects at work, ended up becoming the lead on such projects, and eventually was promoted to a position where my background in this area was a huge part of my career move. All that on 15 minutes a day. You can do it with any goal. The key is to just start. Take one small step. Once you do, something magical happens! You end up growing and soon it’s easy to expand on your goal.
2. It’s Not Just About What You Will Start Doing, But What You STOP
We often think about what we are going to start doing but fail to remember the power in stopping something. For example, if you want to lose weight instead of framing it as “I’ll lose ten pounds” why not say, “I’ll stop eating so much sugar” or “I’ll stop sitting all the time.” Then, think about what you will do instead. Make a list of alternative snacks, commitment to walking daily. There is great power in stopping something that is holding you back from your goals.
3. Who Do You Need to Become to Accomplish Your Goals?
I heard this at a recent Real Estate meeting I attended and loved it. Who do you need to become to accomplish your goals? For example, I’m looking into all options for publishing my books. While I query literary agents, I’m studying the self-publishing track too. Who do I need to become? A self-publishing master! I need to learn all about marketing and the ins and outs of the self-publishing world. How will I do this with my busy schedule? 15 minutes a day of course – see #1.
4. Review Your Goals Daily to Stay on Track
I list out my goals (I usually have about 3 simple ones for the year and one big one that I break down further). I review them daily to remind myself where I want to put my focus.
5. Be Patient with Yourself
Nothing happens overnight. So many people give up on their New Year’s goals when on just Day 2 (or maybe even Day 1) they mess up. Give yourself grace and let it go. Keep starting new. I always find I’m a slow starter to my New Year’s goals because quite frankly, come January 1 I’m exhausted from all the holiday stuff. It’s okay to ease into the new year, as long as you are staying committed to trying your best. I do recommend trying to incorporate at least one step (no matter how small) towards your goal each day. Soon, you will gain momentum and won’t need reminding. Also – don’t forget that life happens. We can’t predict the future or the challenges we may face, but we can give ourselves grace and keep moving.
With these tips, I promise, you will have an Amazing New Year!
